About the band:

Coat of Arms is a four-piece metalcore band hailing from Abu Dhabi, UAE. The band was originally put together by Mohammad Rayan Bailouni in 2009 and after gaining the attention of local audiences and music experts, the band enhanced the line-up, adding Liam Ruddell on bass and Kareem Karameh on drums.
Beginning
Following the release of their first album “Inheritance” in 2009, the band started a country-wide DIY tour called “The Str8 Edge Tour”, in 2010.
The tour ended on a high note, with Coat of Arms opening for well-known German thrash metal band HATRED at the Metal Asylum Open Air Festival 2010.
Coat of Arms was then featured in Germany’s biggest metal magazine “Legacy Magazine” alongside HATRED, based on their exceptional performance at the Festival.
The first official single from Inheritance was “Open the Dams”, which was them also made into a music video.
“Inheritance” was reviewed by regional metal webzine Metality.net:
“There is no doubt that the guys are on the forefront of the modern metal scene in the Middle East”.
After the release of the Inheritance, Coat of Arms won numerous polls and awards online as the “Best Upcoming Musical Artist”.
This is Manslaughter
By the time of their second album This is Manslaughter, Coat of Arms had become established as the forefront metalcore act in the Gulf & Middle East region.
“This is Manslaughter” was released on 17th March 2011.
“Ballad of the Mariner” and “Timepieces”, two of the most popular songs on the album quickly made their way on to multiple regional and international metal compilations and fast became eventually scene and fan favourites.
Coat of Arms then opened for Middle Eastern metal giants NERVECELL in January 2011, and went on to compete at a regional band competition called the RAM Battle of the Bands. Coat of Arms was crowned “Best Band” by five expert judges, winning a 5-date tour of Malaysia.
In March, 2011 the band was hand-picked to play at the Flash Forum in Abu Dhabi in the Yas Rock Factory event, which was held before the “30 Seconds to Mars” concert.
Coat of Arms was then featured in Rockability Magazine, The National, Gulf News, and aired on Abu Dhabi TV following their show at YAS.
Sun & Satellites
From 2011-2013, Coat of Arms took time off to write and record their latest release “Sun & Satellites”. The album was mixed, mastered, and produced by Diego Farias of the California-based Djent band Volumes. The album sees the band take a completely different musical direction and looks to set a new movement in the genre of metal music in the Gulf. The album will be released on 13th January 2013 and will be available to stream online for two weeks before going on sale. The first single to be released from the record was “Composure to Remain” on the 16th December 2012 and the track has already gained airplay on regional and international radio stations.

Coat of Arms – new album announced!

Coat of Arms will be releasing their new album in the summer of 2012. The band has just agreed to work with an excellent producer from Mediaskare.

“The album may be out sooner, possibly being released in two parts as 2 separate EP’s. Weve currently written about 30 songs for this new album, and were now choosing and picking the best ones that will make the cut, and started tracking. The album will see us with a new drummer and we should be hitting the road with some shows fromApril to spread the new album and material. Depending on how the album is released we might 1 or 2 album launches too,” said Mohammed Bailouni, the bands vocalist and guitarist.

There should be about 10 songs on the release(s) which may mean that the band will make a special pack CD with bonus features and songs.

“The album so far is truly unlike anything we’ve ever written before, and with professional production and direction from some brilliant ears, were expecting this to be our biggest year after having a quiet late-2011.  Expect everything from prog, thrash, groove, black, punk and melodic metal!!!!” said Bailouni.

Coat of Arms – new album, new line-up – get ready for the best yet.

One of our favourite UAE metalcore bands, Coat of Arms, has been mighty quiet of late so that can only mean one thing – a new album in the works. We grabbed an interview with the band’s vocalist Mohammed Bailouni to sniff out the dirty little secrets they have been keeping from their fans for the last six months.

Coat of Arms have been quiet of late – what are you up to?
Taking time off in all honesty. To be honest, 2011 has ended up being a much busier year for this band than we expected going into it. So we decided to take the summer off because there aren’t as many people in the UAE that time of the year for shows, so since our last show we have just been prepping and getting things behind the scene moving.

We hear something about new songs and maybe an album – can you elaborate?
Yes, we have written a majority of the record so far, tracked about half the songs to demo them. We’ve spent a lot more time and energy into writing the new stuff, so we’re taking our time with it and seeing which songs stand out from others. No idea when it’ll be ready, but eventually it will be.

When can we next expect to see you on stage?
We’re not entirely sure yet because with the recent member change, but we’re aiming to be hitting the road sometime early 2012. At least we hope so…

We heard that you have changed your drummer – and who is the new guy and where did he come from?
Yes, unfortunately Kareem decided to leave the band almost 2 months ago. It was best for everyone to be honest, but like we said on our fanpage, we won’t forget the great 12 months he gave us. It obviously affected our plans for playing shows, but we’re working on that. We have found a replacement, and have a couple we’re looking at, but I don’t think it would be fair to announce anything yet until we’ve completely finalized the decision.

We have been watching your YouTube series on the band, so, when are you going to do a meet Amir?
This is frequently asked question believe it or not. To put the record straight, when we did the “Meet” profiles of everyone in the band, Amir was still just sessioning for us. However, by the time the DVD came out he had joined full time so we didn’t have enough time to incorporate him in. But he’ll be in the next time we do for sure.

CHECK OUT ALL OF THE BAND’S YOUTUBE SERIES HERE.

What has been Coat of Arms’ greatest achievement so far?
Not entirely sure, but I’d say persevering in an extremely barren scene. There are a lot more things we want to achieve and haven’t yet, and I think that sticking together is probably the hardest thing to do in a band, so with all the member changes that have taken place, I think the way we’ve kept CoA going is a huge achievement.

Having listened to all your albums and demos so far, there is a definite progression to your music and with the last album, there came a certain maturity of sound – do you reckon your next album will knock the socks off the first ones?
Very much so. Like I said, we’ve tracked some of the new ones as demos already, and unmixed or anything, theyve given us goosebumps. The new songs will seperate us apart from any genre people thought we were in, and itll take people places im sure. Every band says their latest work is their best, but I genuinely think that with the new stuff so far, it’s far more mature and concentrated.

There were slight sound issues on the ‘This is Manslaughter’ album, how are you going to make sure that the next album is clean?
Here’s the thing, when we started doing “This is Manslaughter”, we were still a completely unknown band in the scene. So all the songs were done at my house. It wasn’t until we played Yas Flash Forum that we realized we had an album people were waiting for. Therefore for the sake of consistency we just finished off the album the same way we started it.  Our knowledge and engineering skills have a come long way since then, and we’re not planning on recording it the same way again. We just didn’t have the cash or time to properly do it at that time. I think this time will be completely different, we know what were dealing with before we start, and we’re aiming to get it as good as can be, quality wise.

If you could slap any single singer alive or dead, who would it be and why?
Lil Wayne… for obvious reasons. Now im pissed off already haha

What is the least ‘metal’ thing about each of you?
Haha, I would say mine is that I have a LV wallet which was given to me by a family member for my High School graduation in 2005, and that I know every word on the Craig David – Born to Do It album. Liam is actually quite metal all in all, so im finding it hard to identify something. Amir’s is that he used to be a break dancer and loves the generic crap rap people despise (sorry Amir, it’s true) … represent (inside joke, don’t ask) haha

RAM Battle Middle East – Freefall from Kuwait nab the prizes!

RAM Battle Middle East on Friday night was amazing.  All bands brought their A-game and made judging super tough.
Freefall, progressive rockers from Kuwait won the battle on their music originality, lyrics and song writing, they got crowds jumping and were truely a flawless act to watch. Freefall are about to release an album, so watch this space for more details of how YOU can get your hands on music by one of the Middle east’s best bands.

In close second by 1.5 points was Explode, progressive metal from Iran, this metal band wowed judges with technique, stage presence and the judges said their bassist was one of the best playing last night.

Big shout to 5grs who were playing live for the first time with the line up they had. Catch them at Unirock in September. The crowds loved them and several ppl came to organisers saying thank you for bringing the band to Dubai. Judges said they had a great stage performance, but the vocalist needs to work on the switching between clean vocals and growls.

Coat of Arms really put on a magnificent performance and two of the judges were backing them for the top two. One of the judges commented that they should not do any more band battles as they have passed that stage in their career and should now concentrate on getting a clean album out, getting signed and going international, he said that they are well able to take on an international career.

Revelerz opened the night, which is tough spot, but they carried it off well. We liked their music and would love to see them again under less pressured circumstances. Their vocalist did have some trouble keeping his voice directed at the microphone, so the crowd lost a fair amount of what he was singing. This was one of the criticisms also noted by the judges.

Underground Dream played last, while they were not the most original band of the night in terms of music performance, they were good and we would definately like to see them again.

Bilocate as usual were sublime and smashed the sound barrier, with what was one of the best sets we have seen on the Metal Asylum stage.

Big thank yous to all of the bands, who made this night the success it was.
Also thanks to Sean Allison, Ziad Makki, Barney Ribeiro and Ramzi Essayed for taking time to come out and judge. Also thanks to the sponsors, Musician’s Warehouse, In The Mix studios, RAGE, Rockability Mag, Jorzine, Resurrection Rock & Metal Night. A big thank u to Barry Kassab from Musicians Warehouse who came down and perfected the sound and of course to Yousuf, who provided the mics for the drumkit.

Thank you to all the amazing crowds who came down and supported, without u the music scene would die. See u all after Ramadan for some more Middle Eastern rock and metal.

Juliana Down, the UAE’s most successful rock band will be hitting Cheers after Ramadan, supported by rock cover band Black Parachute and groovecore giants Sandwash.
