Nikotin
Dubai’s favourite rock band, Nikotin, are ripping up the soundbooths in the recording studio as we speak. They are working very hard on their brand new, sizzling hot album, Panodrama which will feature some of their fan favourites as well as some brand new material. So we here at Metality UAE got up close and personal and found out a little more:
So tell me a bit about the album, what is it called, what is the idea behind the name?
Mr. P: Being our first album, we figured we’d go with a concept that was more close to our lives, as our songs express different feelings and emotions that we subconsciously go through in everyday life. The album’s going to be named, Panodrama – A term we coined which basically defines an amalgamation of a variety of human emotions.

Which are your favorite songs on the album and why?
Dirty: Now that’s a tough one!!! We’ve put a lot of time, hard work and dedication into each track. Individually each song has a part of us in it, so to choose one over the rest is quite an impossible task.
Do you think this album is good enough to launch you onto the international stage and into homes across the UAE?
Charlie: Definitely, without a doubt! We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t believe in our music ourselves. Feedback that we have received in emails, messages or tweets from fans not only solidifies our confidence but also is a sign that we are on the right path and also not forgetting to mention the huge support we’ve received over time. We are truly thankful about that.
What is the feel of the album, have you kept it soft, or is there a mix of styles?
Cruize: There’s an eclectic mix of styles in the album and because of that it’s hard to pin down a certain sub-genre of rock that this album would fall under. But we just love the way the album is coming together!! .. Quite unpredictable & surprising even for us.
Do you think your music is evolving as you play more, or has is pretty much remained the same since you started?
Psycho: We’ve seen ourselves grow with time and with every song that we’ve composed. Our compositions are based on certain roots that we’ve attained from our musical influences. Keeping that as a base, we’ve allowed our music to take shape while being as experimental as possible. We do try to be careful & not allow it to distract us away from what Nikotin is all about.
If you could be any musician for a day, who would you be?
Cruize:Hansi Kursch of Blind Guardian/ Bjorn Gelotte of Inflames
Dirty: Fieldy of Korn
Charlie: Chad Kroeger of Nickelback/ James Hetfield of Metallica
Mr. P:Slash / Jimi Hendrix
Psycho: Mike Portnoy/ Neil Peart/ Buddy Rich
If Nikotin could open for any band on the planet, who would it be?
Charlie: Haha! You love catching us tongue-tied with questions like these, don’t you? Well, we’re all huge Metallica fans and recently we took time out from recording our album to do a Metallica tribute night. With that, I’m sure you’ve figured out our answer by now.
Have you had any funny/disturbing incidents happen during any of your gigs?
Psycho: Quite a few memorable ones actually! But the one that tops it all would be this one time at one of ours shows in Abu Dhabi last year – Charlie’s leg slipped off the monitor speakers just before the cue to Decide’s heavy post-bridge solo leaving Cruize stuck in a “wait for it” pose for a few awkward minutes before finally turning around, completely confused as to what was going on, only to find Charlie trying to compose himself after his little “slip-up”. But you how it is – in the heat of the moment – where you reach the climax of the song & you raise your hand in euphoria and…… Nothing!!! Quite awkward I must say, but that didn’t stop me from laughing my butt off from behind the drum set!!!
Tell me, how did you come up with the name Nikotin?
Mr. P: Addiction being the key word here, we decided to go with Nikotin. No, it has nothing to do with substance addiction; music addiction is what it’s all about. If music is a drug, we’re proud to be junkies.
Their album will be out after Ramadan, so watch this space for further details! Check out their new song Broken Dreams.
